The Hamburg Authority for Urban Development and Environmental Issues – directed by Senator Anja Hajduk – is responsible for urban management and landscaping, construction and housing, infrastructure, energy management as well as nature conservation. The department “Sustainability” fosters a sustainable development in Hamburg in general and a sustainable urban development and education in particular. At present, the authority continuously organises Hamburg’s contribution to the UN-decade “Education for Sustainability” with its initiative “Hamburg Learns Sustainability” (Hamburg lernt Nachhaltigkeit).
Ziegfeld Enterprise supported the „Hamburg Weeks on Future“ (Hamburger Zukunftswochen) already in the third year providing public relations and publicity.
Next to approaching large Hamburg based companies, inviting them to take part within the Future Weeks, Ziegfeld Enterprise was asked to create, plan and realise an attention-drawing kick-off-event this year for the first time, too. To open the course of events dealing with sustainability, Ziegfeld set up seven life-sized wooden cubes lined up through the impressive shopping mall of Hamburg’s main railway station on the 4th of September 2009 and asked a bunch of ambitious students of a renowned local art college to design them live in the context of the Future Week’s seven themes. Senator Anja Hajduk gave the start signal for this designing process, marking the beginning of the 3rd Future Weeks as well with that.
