The otto group data processing centre (formally known as OTTO data processing centre) is the central gateway handling all intra-corporate data processes worldwide. All incoming customer and business data is checked, processed and stored right here by impressive mainframe complexes, operated by quite a number of employees, overviewed by the the central control station (“Leitstand”).
IT professionals working in the centre are continuously planning and implementing complex strategies on innovative data processing, bundling and storage.
Within a 3-month exhibition entitled “Mission Data Processing – From Punchcard to Terabyte”, targeted on guest groups as well as otto group employees, relevance and history of the data processing centre and data processing as a science were depicted vividly.
Historical as well as most up-to-date objects showcasing 50 years of data processing history and large-framed information displays invited not only to marvel, but to learn more. Within a small corner prepared as a cinema visitors were offered to experience the company’s history in data processing in an especially produced documentary. In a “habtic box” visitors could guess with their hands and imagination only what may be hidden in the dark inside.
The conclusion at the end of the journey through time was how much IT already became an indispensable part of the company’s daily routine.
