The OTTO retail company is the nucleus of the Otto Group, which was expanded to become the world's largest mail-order group following the appointment of Dr Michael Otto as CEO. Since January 2005, the OTTO retail company has been run by a three-member Executive Board, thus ensuring short decision-making processes. With fast, slender and economic processes, the company feels it is well positioned to react to the considerable increase in market dynamism and the frequent changes in customer behaviour by means of successful concepts.
From 2 to 5 January 2007, OTTO invited 100 young people aged between 16 and 22 years to Hamburg for the "Fair Future Factory" to learn about and discuss issues of environmental and social responsibility, textiles, design and job opportunities in a globalised world. The youngsters were requested to apply with work relevant to the topic. The 100 winners came from 19 different nations and around a third of participants were exchange students from cooperative partner AFS – Internationale Begegnungen e.V. The programme included, for example, creative workshops on sustainability, informative talks on textiles and job opportunities or a round of discussions with representatives from business, politics and NGOs on the critical globalisation issue "Trading at any price?". The youngsters were given the opportunity to relax in the evening on a boat trip of a different kind around the harbour and on a visit to a disco. On the last day, the youngsters staged a show for enthusiastic OTTO employees and external guests to present their results, impressions and findings.
