Cochlear Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, based in Hanover, is a global market leader in innovative hearing solutions. The aim behind Cochlear's products and services is to enable people around the globe to hear better. Over 180,000 people in more than 100 countries worldwide have been re-connected to their families, friends and social circle thanks to one of these hearing systems.
"I want to hear" is a Cochlear Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG initiative aimed at explaining profound hearing loss and providing information on cochlear implants (CI), which are artificial hearing systems. 1.2 million people in Germany are profoundly or almost totally deaf. If hearing aids, even well-tuned ones, no longer help when communicating in social situations, the person affected often withdraws from society. A CI can help to counter this.
As part of the 1st Frankfurt Ear Day, under the patronage of the Mayor Petra Roth, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Clinic and the "I want to hear" initiative invited visitors to a free information event about hearing loss. Around 150 deaf people and their relatives accepted the invitation and came along to the university clinic on 25 April 2009. Anne Brüning, the popular presenter of the TV programme einfach!gesund, acted as a chair for the event.
