AFS Interkulturelle Begegnungen e.V. is one of the oldest and largest youth exchange organisations worldwide. This non-profit association offers student exchange schemes, guest family programmes and volunteer services in over 40 countries. The association’s education programmes play an active role in promoting tolerance and international understanding. AFS is a not-for-profit organisation which relies to a large degree on volunteers.
On 9th June 2005, the Federal Press Office organised a programme for 17 AFS guest families who had taken in students from Poland, Australia, South Africa, Venezuela, Japan, China, Czech Republic and other countries for one year. The guest families volunteer to provide accommodation for exchange students; they do so because they believe in international exchange and intercultural learning. After being greeted by government spokesman Béla Anda, the highlight of the event was a photo opportunity with the chancellor and the guest families.
